File emulation actually executes a file in a virtual environment and logs the activity of the file to uncover the actions of the file or program.  When a suspicious file is detected the anti-virus program takes appropriate actions.  This method can cause some false alarms but is used in the more sophisticated anti-virus programs and is highly effective.

Malicious Activity Based Detection - This method uses suspicious behavior monitoring to detect suspicious program activity and is good for detecting unknown viruses.  This method can also cause false alarms but is needed for detecting malware not recognized in a virus database.

Signature Based Detection - This method uses the virus dictionary to compare file activity to the known list of viruses.  This is most common in most anti-virus software programs.  This method is only good for detecting known viruses.
