McAfee Total Protection includes multi-user Parental Controls, protection from identity theft, spam, and scams. McAfee's security service allows the user to have the latest enhancements and threat updates that block viruses and spyware. Also, it includes a firewall to deter hacking.

Included into McAfee Total Protection Package:

McAfee SecurityCenter
McAfee SecurityCenter allows the user to monitor the computer's security status, know instantly whether the computer's virus, spyware, e-mail, and firewall protection services are up-to-date, and act on potential security vulnerabilities. It provides the navigational tools and controls the user need to coordinate and manage all areas of the computer's protection.

McAfee VirusScan
VirusScan's detection and protection services defend the user and the computer from the latest security threats, including viruses, Trojans, tracking cookies, spyware, adware, and other potentially unwanted programs. Protection extends beyond the files and folders on the desktop, targeting threats from different points of entry-including e-mail, instant messages, and the Web.

McAfee Personal Firewall
Personal Firewall offers advanced protection for the computer and personal data. Personal Firewall establishes a barrier between the computer and the Internet, silently monitoring Internet traffic for suspicious activities.

McAfee Anti-Spam
Anti-Spam (formerly called SpamKiller) stops unsolicited e-mail from entering the user's Inbox by examining incoming e-mail, and then marking it as spam (e-mail soliciting the user to purchase something) or phishing (e-mail soliciting the user to provide personal information to a potentially fraudulent Web site). Anti-Spam then filters the spam e-mail and moves it to the McAfee Anti-Spam folder.

McAfee QuickClean
QuickClean improves the computer's performance by deleting files that can create clutter on the computer. It empties Recycle Bin and deletes temporary files, shortcuts, lost file fragments, registry files, cached files, cookies, browser history files, sent and deleted e-mail, recently used files, Active-X files, and system restore point files. QuickClean also protects the user's privacy by using the McAfee Shredder component to securely and permanently delete items that may contain sensitive, personal information, such as names and addresses.

McAfee Disk Defragmenter
Disk Defragmenter arranges files and folders on the computer to ensure that they do not become scattered (that is, fragmented) when saved on the computer's hard drive. By defragmenting the hard drive periodically, it is ensure that these fragmented files and folders are consolidated for quick retrieval later.

McAfee Shredder
McAfee Shredder deletes (or shreds) items permanently from the computer's hard drive. Even when manually delete files and folders, empty the Recycle Bin, or delete Temporary Internet Files folder, one can still recover this information using computer forensic tools. As well, a deleted file can be recovered because some programs make temporary, hidden copies of open files. Shredder protects the user's privacy by safely and permanently deleting these unwanted files. It's important to remember that shredded files cannot be restored.

McAfee Network Manager
Network Manager presents a graphical view of the computers and components that make up home network. The user can use Network Manager to remotely monitor the protection status of each managed computer in the network, and remotely fix reported security vulnerabilities on those computers.

Consumer Feedbacks And Complaints

Actual Customer Feedback:

"...It has lots of features like network intrusion, spam filtering. I have McAfee products in the past and it gives you entire protection and piece of mind while working in today's internet worlds. It accurately detects all malware and malicious files that gets downloaded without your knowledge and removes them..."
Portion of actual user comment from Reviews.PriceGrabber.com

"...you know to expect solid malware protection in a variety of formats. Total Protection 2009 delivers, but it’s also slow, awkwardly designed, and frustrating to use, and it lacks many obvious refinements we’ve come to expect in security products..."
Portion of actual user comment from ComputerShopper.com

"...has improved malware detection, and its spam filter is much improved. But most of its overabundance of features haven't changed at all; its UI is sluggish; and it saps system performance..."
Portion of actual user comment from PCMag.com

"...In terms of performance we counted a total of 13 additional processes running behind the software. This uses up a decent chunk of your system memory and takes quite a while to start up after a system boot. Scans are quite fast but have a significant impact on system performance and while anti-virus and anti-spyware detection seems efficient, there are lots of other suites out there that can make similar claims and don't suffer from the issues highlighted above..."
Portion of actual user comment from ItReviews.com

"...As a virus scanner, McAfee works relatively well. It will scan your system for viruses, and if your definitions are up-to-date, find them some of the time. However, it is pretty strange that after making virus software for so many years, they still cannot provide a reasonably well working Spyware...

Another major complaint is the sheer size of the system resource footprint that McAfee total protection takes up. If you have an older computer, less than 2gb of ram (4gb with Vista), this program will create a very noticeable slowdown in your computer's performance. Comparing to how it runs on my wife's laptop with 4gb of ram vs. some of the computers at my work with only 1.5gb, the older work computers are drastically slowed down by McAfee...

In concussion, if you don't care about 1. Annoying pop ups that steal your focus and cannot be disabled, 2. Very limited spyware removal and 3. Slow and poorly written code that uses a large portion of system resources, you MIGHT consider buying this software..."
Portion of actual user comment from Amazon.com

"...McAfee happily runs in the background, keeping me free of viruses. I see evidence of it working when my husband somehow got numerous viruses while I, despite some risky internet use, have never been infected. Indeed, McAfee has caught a few in action trying to infect my computer. I once loaded McAfee onto my husband's computer to disinfect it and left it there. He hasn't been infected since...

The one thing McAfee doesn't seem to do as well as it should is spyware protection..."
Portion of actual user comment from Amazon.com

"...The Backup program isn't of much use, since it only compares file names and not size, so if you back up documents and you change them, they will not be updated on the backup medium. Site Advisor Plus is ok in my opinion, but not that much better than the free one. Easy Network is also ok for XP and 2000 users, but Vista lets you basically plug in a network cable and you are set up. Parental controls are also useless since Vista comes with parental controls..."
